Considering moving from Costa del Sol to Chiclana.  Concerned that with limited Spanish may feel somewhat isolated unless there are places to meet other expats who could offer advice on living in the area.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received, thank you.

Hi,

I am living with my husband in El Puerto de Santa Maria which is close to Chiclana. The Costa de la Luz is very different from the Costa del Sol. You wont find a lot of British expats here I am afraid. I personally find this is the advantage of the Costa de la Luz as it is not crowded with second home owners from Britain, German, Holland etc. Spanish people here are very friendly but not many speak English. However, they try to make themselves understood or understand you as best as they can. It is possible to live here without speaking Spanish but it is obviously much nicer if you can speak Spanish and communicate with people. There are a few language exchange groups around e.g. one in San Fernando where Spanish people want to practice their Enlish and you can practice your Spanish. I personally love these groups as it is a great way to meet Spanish people and practice your own Spanish. You could also try websites like open language or conversation exchange where you can find Spanish language buddies.

Hope this helps a bit. If you have any other questions, just ask

saludos Karin :-)

I moved from Fuengirola to Chiclana last September.  Love it here. Where are you on costa del sol?

Many thanks for taking the time to reply, the exchange groups seem a great way to interact and learn the language.

Hi, we have just sold our house in Calahonda and are renting near Miraflores Golf whilst we decide where to move to next.  We plan to visit Chiclana again shortly as we did love the area but my main concern was our lack of Spanish and how we would integrate and on the practical side, whether for example there are English speaking doctors and dentists.  Any advice would be gratefully received, thank you.

Hi Tracy,

I live in El Puerto de Santa Maria which is opposite of Cadiz. It is not very far from Chiclana. Yes if you like we can meet for a coffee. You are the first expat I will meet apart from my husband`s work collegues :-) I am away from 3rd to 13th of July but after that I am here.

Hi Carol,

there are English speaking doctors and dentists here. If you have private insurance they would advise you of doctors who speak English. I have the telephone number of a lady in Jerez who is an English GP. She is practicing here and allegedly very good. However, I personally have no recommendations as so far we have not needed a doctor.

There are not a lot of expats here, so if you dont speak the language and dont work here you may indeed find yourself a bit isolated.

I personally love the fact that it is very Spanish here and that there are not a lot of expats. I am learning Spanish and people really appreciate my efforts.

hope this helps

Karin

Hi Karin, many thanks for replying, we plan to return soon for another look around but have received some very positive comments on the area which is great. We may even decide to rent there for a while to see if we can settle.
