Hi all, its a little later than i had originally planned, but we are now planning to make our move early in 2023 (hopefully January). I am now looking at the process of applying for a non-lucrative visa (NLV). We are a US couple and i have looked at the requirements and forms needed on the web site of the Spanish Consulate in New York. It actually looks pretty simple and that we meet the requirements. Part of me says, just fill out the forms ourselves. Another part of me says hire an expert because things that looks simple often  are not.  Any advice?

Hello,

We are Canadians and completed the NLV ourselves via the Spanish Consulate in Toronto, almost five years ago. It all went through very smoothly, without issues. It did not occur to us to use the services of a lawyer - just researched the documents & requirements and completed the appropriate forms. The Spanish staff at the Consulate were extremely helpful, making the process incredibly easy.

Wishing you all the best,

Mike & Lana

You do not need a lawyer. Waste of money.  Just make sure you fill the forms in just as they ask.  They'll tell you if you got it wrong  Make sure you have all the documents in original versions or notarized.  We did ours in Boston.  Very easy.  Just takes time especially now that summer is coming and the 'funcionarios' all go on vacation.........

I agree with the others try and fill in the forms yourself then if that turns out to be too challenging and pressed for time try a lawyer. My cousin is trying to deal, from Washington CD, with a visa for his daughter to go to college in Barcelona, here is an extract of what he is dealing with.

I’ve collected all the documents, got official translations and notarizations, FBI reports, and sent for Apostilles for the student visa. Health insurance in Spain was holding us up since most companies won’t sell us anything until the school is about to start, and that doesn’t help for the visa.  However, I found a company that would sell us the policy now, so for €40 a month she is covered for everything: doctor’s visits, hospitals, prescriptions, dental, etc.  It is truly amazing how inexpensive health insurance is compared to the US.

If you speak Spanish that is even better. Bureaucracy in Spain is often fierce but often extremely easy. Let's hope you fall into the easy category.

Good luck, once here you will be pleased to you made the effort.
