Hi

My husband and I, both pensioners, and possibly one of my adult sons, are hoping to move close to Gibraltar this year and we really don´t know the area. San Roque looks like a nice place to live. I'd be very grateful for any feedback on places to look at, places to avoid. We have a large dog who doesn´t need much exercise, nonetheless somewhere with a little greenery around would be lovely. It would also be good to know of a vet and medical services.  I probably have lots of questions but that's a start!!

Hi Jacqueline, I live in San Roque, as do some of my kids and grandkids.

There are several parks, a wonderful forest, and the beach is only a 15 minutes drive away.

If you don’t drive, bus links are easy to La Linea and Algeciras, from where you can continue onwards. There’s a train station just 10 minutes away also.

San Roque has 2 health centres. There are public hospitals in Algeciras and La Linea, and the nearest private hospital is in Palmones, just 10 minutes away.

Large shopping centre in Palmones, where you should be able to find everything! Shopping centers also in Algeciras and La Linea.

San Roque has some excellent supermarkets, and a street market on Sunday mornings.

If you need any more info, please don’t be shy about asking! You can private message me anytime.

Hi Carol. That is really helpful, thank you so much! Can you recommend any areas which would be good? We don't have  huge budget (ceiling 100k) but only really need a two bedroom place. Have you lived there for long?

Hi Jacqueline, I’ve lived here on and off for nearly 20 years, but I’ve settled here now.

San Roque municipality covers a large area that includes Sotogrande and parts of Alcaidesa, which are the more expensive areas ro buy, as there is a large expat community. Campamento and Puente Mayorga also come under San Roque; in reality these appear as separate villages.

I’m my opinion, I think your best bet would be to look in San Roque casco, with some properties more in line with your budget, and for me, the nicest area to live.
Having moved rather a lot in my lifetime, I think it’s always best to visit the area first in order to get a better feel for the place.

If you plan on living in Spain full time, you also need to consider any costs/legalities involved with gaining residency. Brexit has made it more difficult for British passport holders.

Anyway, I hope all this helps! 😊

Hi Carol, yes it certainly does. We do actually live in Spain. We've also been here for 20 years.  One of my sons married a Gibraltarian girl last summer and their idea is for them to move back there in about 4 years' time. Our idea is to sell our house here (could be quick, could take years!) and then rent around here with our other son whilst buying down in San Roque, ready to move when my son and daughter-in-law move back to Gib. So, once the house is at least under offer we'll make a trip down there and have a look at some properties...you've really helped narrow down the area of focus. Thank you! Similarly to you, we have moved around a lot (Israel, Cyprus, France, UK......) ! Once I have worked out how to PM I'll do that if I may

Have a great week!
