Hello all,

In 2023 (27th May to June 2nd) the Hertfordshire Big Band will be visiting the area. We are an amateur band comprising doctors, teachers, microbiologists, rocket scientists and a five times world memory champion who still forgets the route to rehearsals (I kid you not). Through the year the band performs at many varied venues, from jazz clubs via concert halls to charity functions. My job, apart from playing with the band when travel allows, is to find gigs for this tour. We will be based in Chipiona (where I now live) but will be able to travel as far as Barbate along the coast and inland as far as Sevilla. Typical places to play are hotels, theatres, outdoor bandstands and the like. Due to things being slow to reopen after COVID I’m struggling a bit to identify potential gigs and so if anyone has any suggestions or would like to host us for a gig then please contact me. We require approximately 8m wide by 5m deep flat space and access to mains electricity. Our repertoire ranges from the classic Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington charts through to more contemporary pieces by Gordon Goodwin, Bob Mintzer and others. We usually carry two singers who cover well known numbers by Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Leigh, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Michael Buble and others. If you can be of any assistance with venue suggestions then please contact me through this forum. To find out more about the band please Google “Hertfordshire Big Band” as I believe posting the website here is against the rules. Many thanks.

Hi mikeymd

One possibility could be the Castle in Sanlucar de Barrameda (opposite the Barbadillo Museum and Shop -Castillo de Santiago). Over the years I have seen a few live events at the Castle, including classical, flamenco and rock musicians. It is under the control of the town council. The The Alcázar of Jerez de la Frontera, a former Moorish alcázar, is also a superb setting for events.

The second thing to consider would be a list of Festivals/Feria's in the Costa de la Luz taking place around the period of the proposed tour, and seeing if you can 'dove-tail' with the events. You would need to contact the various City Councils (Ayuntiamento) to find out what is possible.

Finally, the big Sherry Companies have many large spaces for events like festivals and weddings (eg Hidalgo La Gitana and, Barbadillo in Sanlucar, Osborne in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Gonzalez Byass and Valdespino in Jerez etc. etc.. They will all have marketing/visitor centre offices and this could be a potential option.

My family has a house in Sanlucar de Barrameda, and I have visited a number of events in Sanlucar de Barrameda and neighbouring towns over the years, thus my bit of 'local knowledge. I hope this helps!

Hi mikeymd. One final point would be photographs and website details when seeking potential venues, enabling the venues to get an idea of what the Hertfordshire Big Band is all about. Cheers and good luck, Andy.

Hi there, read your post and the first place that springs to mind is Conil de la Frontera. They have a great open space with stage where they put on all kinds of events over the summer. You might want to try them or Barbate which is also a great place to perform but not sure they have a stage available or Vejer de la Frontera.
