Goldcar car hire

Hi Alex,

We recently hired a car from Goldcar based in Jerez  airport. Having paid for the hire of a Fiat 500 for 7 days online including extra for insurance we thought it was just a case of picking up key and away to go.

No such luck. At the Goldcar desk  we were told we had to pay 84 euros as a deposit for a full tank of fuel.  All we had to do was sign a document in Spanish to this effect. 

On returning to UK we find out this document has nothing to do with fuel but is in fact additional insurance at a cost of 220 euros with no return.

I would like to know if other people have been duped in the same way.

This experience has put me off travelling to Spain ever again.

Update.

Our credit card company have informed us that they will investigate only once we have translated the contract ( signed at the airport)  into English.

Update; 24/07/22.

Credit card company cannot refund any money paid for additional insurance as we are responsible for outcome of signing a document we did not understand. Never sign any document you do not fully understand and agree with.

I would suggest, unfortunately there are rogue people/businesses everywhere, it is not confined to Spain.

Do not let this incident sway your view of a whole country.

We have had cause to rent a car on two occasions during the past eighteen months. For both (Enterprise) we made the arrangements from Canada to pick up the car at Madrid Airport and drop off at their Cadiz location. Both rentals went without incident or unexpected charges, fuel had just to be left where it had been showing on the gauge when the car was collected in Madrid.

Hi , we have always hired from Goldcar. It's not just that company, my brother has just come to see us in Chiclana and had the same issue.  When booking a car just pay basic amount  on line, when you get to the desk you get offers sometimes  free second driver, upgrade or even full insurance at half price.

Insurance has to be taken out on Spanish soil to be valid,  if you take out on line or your own , you will still get card blocked for 1200 euros.

I hope you paid with a credit or debit card.  Simply go online to your bank and dispute the change as fraudulent. You'll get your 200 back that way.  Be assertive with the bank that the representative misled you and it was a con.

Hi Alan, the car rental should not have charged you for any extra but can block certain amount on your card so that the car can be returned in the same condition. I travelled regularly to Spain, if the car hire company failed to properly advertised what is acceptable may be someone can provide the details of the governing body to log the inappropriate charges. I will recommend Firefly company for car rental instead.

We have had a lot of cars from gold cars at gib, but the last one caused me to change the way we travel and im looking at a bus to chiclana.

What happened was, we picked up the car inspected it and taken pictures, three days latter when walking back to the car i noticed something on the inside of the tyre which was wire, the tyre had rubbed on a part and throught the cassing.

This made the vehicle dangrous and illegal so pictures taken and sent off, wheel changed for spare. As it was an emmergancy one we reduced the car usage.

Nothing heard .

Returned the car explained the problem and the dangers, he was not interested and did not want to sèe it and he said punture at one point but we left for our flight, i then recived a bill for a punture evan though it had none and the tyre was on the limit we had a 50 uro deduction from the deposit???.

We did contact them and go spain but  they are not intrested even with picktures and the fact they had put us in danger (more money for them) after lots of e mails and no real organization to help you there is nothing you can do. They can contiue to scame people, plus they are linkedcwith other companise. What an image for Spain.

If any one knows of a n organization to contact please let me know.

Dont use them.
